Today’s post is an introduction to KatNips.
In my kitchen I have a big black wall painted with blackboard paint. I’ve discovered I have a great admiration for a mind that thinks of making paint you can write on and erase. And who knew you could have a whole wall to play on?
Turns out it’s a thing.
You can buy the paint at Home Depot and Amazon, while Canadian Tire (the only place nearby I can actually go and buy stuff in person!) describes it this way: writeable, erasable chalkboard paint finish inspires creativity.
It did get the creative juices flowing.
A couple of weeks ago as I was looking at the expanse of black wall and asking myself why it was still blank, an idea popped into my head. Why didn’t I use that blackboard to write down my insights, visions, and inspirational reminders?
Who couldn’t use reminders that life really is wonderful? Regardless of anything in life that seems to say otherwise.
Then what if took a picture and shared it with friends, or in blog posts, or on social media platforms? Sounded like a plan to me.
So this is my first ever KatNip:
“I never get there by thinking my way there. I get there by feeling my way there.”
Definitely something I need to remember!
Why the Name KatNips?
You may have read a post about Kat’s origins before. She showed up in this blog for the very first time in this post.
But she’s been with me for a long time.
We all have different aspects to our personalities. Kat is the fierce part of mine, always ready to say, “Let’s GO!”
Yes, sometimes we seem to be in conflict with each other. If you’ve ever had the experience where one part of you wants one thing, but another part wants the exact opposite, you will know exactly what I mean.
Kat is the brave one, the one who has guts, the one who will take a risk. Without her, I’d probably nap more. She’s a bit of an annoying smart ass, really, but she often comes out with some real gems.
On the day I was staring at the large ‘blankness’ of the wall, Kat raised her hand and said, “Me, me, me!”

And it all came together.
But That’s Not All
It would be disingenuous of me to imply that this plot didn’t have anything to do with me, that it was all Kat’s doing. But I do rely on that part of me to take action.
The idea for KatNips inspirational messages has been there for a while.
Ever had this happen? A part of you is inspired, enthusiastic and ready to jump, trusting there’s a net. Then another part of you says, wait, hold on a minute, are you sure, maybe that’s the wrong choice, what will people think.
KatNips are messages for those moments.
I’d already looked words up in the dictionary to see what other Kat words I could create. There were several.
- Katalyst and Katalyze (adding sizzle)
- Katapult (taking a leap of faith)
- Kategory and Katalogue
- Katnap (my fave!) and Katwalk (another fave!)
- Katerpillar (transformation anyone?)
But the idea of writing reminders to myself on the blackboard that I’d see every time I walked into my kitchen, and then sharing them with readers and friends as KatNips, seemed like the most creative and fun version of the idea.
And shouldn’t fun and play be high on our list of priorities?
It is for me. How about you?
